Wikidata for entity SEO: notability before optimisation

Wikidata is a collaborative knowledge base with its own notability and sourcing rules. An item should exist because it meets those rules, not because a website wants a visibility badge. Neither Wikidata nor schema.org promises a Google ranking or an LLM citation.

Check notability first

Wikidata considers an entity acceptable when it has a valid sitelink, is clearly identifiable and can be described using serious publicly available references, or fulfils a structural need in Wikidata. Promotional intent is not a substitute for these criteria.

If independent references do not yet identify the organisation clearly, the defensible action is to improve public factual documentation and wait. Creating a weak or promotional item can lead to deletion and does not establish authority.

Build an accurate item

  • Use the official name, description and aliases needed for disambiguation.
  • Attach statements to reliable references and retain qualifiers such as dates where they limit the claim.
  • Link only official identifiers and profiles that represent exactly the same entity.
  • Declare conflicts of interest and follow the community process when editing a connected entity.

Connect the website carefully

Schema.org sameAs indicates that two identifiers refer to the same entity. Add it only after verifying that the external page is truly equivalent. A sameAs link can support consistency, but it is not a certification, ranking factor or citation guarantee.
